The mystery of Winchcombe Abbey

2016-08-27 16.15.12

Someone is telling porkies because Timothy saw a sign which claimed to be the entrance to Winchcombe Abbey.  Wikipedia, meanwhile, says that Winchcombe Abbey is a “now-vanished Benedictine abbey” – and that while it was it was founded in 798 and was the capital of Mercia (an Anglo Saxon kingdom), it was knocked down in 1539!

Yet, in this unadulterated photo, Timothy is hanging in his Royal British Legion jute bag – in 2016.  Even if we have the date of the photo out by a bit, Royal British Legion was only founded in 1921 – a full 382 years after the abbey was knocked down!

We didn’t see an abbey, only the metal plate.
