Llangollen Railway ticket hall

Llangollen Railway is the only standard gauge heritage railway in North Wales. It starts near the historic Dee Bridge (built in 1345) in the centre of Llangollen town. It travels 10 miles travelling through the Dee Valley to the town of Corwen.

Unfortunately for Timothy, we went after a visit to the nearby Pontcysyllte aqueduct (which we came to see) and didn’t know that Llangollen or its railway even existed until we found them, at 15:20… that’s about 10 minutes after the last train of the day.

Ooops.  But now we know about both, and will be back another day – especially as Timothy made friends with the lady in the station shop.

  1. So glad you found the railway and will be back to try it out properly. The nearby horse-drawn canal boat trips are also marvellous and well worth adding to your itinerary for next time. If you like heritage railways Vern can draw you up a list for Shropshire and mid Wales…

    1. Thanks Rose – we did see a poster abot the horse-drawn canal boat trip while in Llangollen, and managed to carry Tim up the hill just before one set off.
No photos of Timothy on the boat (we saw no sensible hanging places) but we did get a couple of the horses and the boat itself. It was very peaceful to be pulled along in a boat without a motor humming away, and great to see an actual horse on a canal towpath after so many years of walking or cycling along them ourselves.
